Visa & Passport Information.

Useful Information Regarding Visas & Passports

Validity: A valid passport is essential when you when you travel abroad. Although your passport has been issued for 10 years (5 years for children), you should note that some overseas countries have an immigration requirement for a passport to remain valid for a minimum periodafter the date of entry to that country (typically 6 months). All countries require that your passport is valid both on the day you arrive and on the day you leave. If your passportis in its final year of validity, you are advised to check the requirements of the country(ies) of destination before you make final travel palns.

Children and young people: Your children will also need their own passports – even infants under two years old.

Please note that the FCO no longer offer information via telephone so this should be removed if you currently state this. 

PLEASE NOTE: All visas require passports to be valid for 6 months after date of return. Most visas also have time restrictions from date of issue – please check embassy website for details. For countries which do not require visas there are also restrictions on length and type of visit – please check embassy website for details.

Rules about visas applicable to UK citizens as follows:

1. CHINA

A visa is required when entering China and must be applied for in advance. The Chinese Embassy has authorised the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre to deal with Chinese visa applications. Below is the link to their website which explains the procedure for this – http://www.visaforchina.org. You can apply either by post or in person (online appointment required if apply in person). Visa fees are £66 per person (apply in person) or £84 per person (apply by post). The turnaround time for postal application is 2 weeks. If applying in person, you can collect in 4 working days.

(Please note the visa is only valid for 3 months so we suggest you apply 2 months prior to your departure).

2. VIETNAM

A visa is required when entering Vietnam and can be obtained in advance or on arrival at the entry airport. Below is a link to their website which explains the procedure for this – http://vietnamembassy.org.uk. A Preapproval (Approval letter £15) is required for landing visa (if applying for visa on arrival), the visa on arrival stamp fee is 45 USD which should be paid directly to the immigration authority at the port of entry. Passport photos are also required.

3. LAOS

A visa is required when entering Laos and can only be obtained on arrival at entry airport. Landing visa is obtainable without preapprovals. Visa fee is 35 USD per person. The immigration authority at the port of entry will collect the fee. Passport photos are also required.

4. CAMBODIA

A visa is required when entering Cambodia and can be obtained in advance or on arrival at the entry airport. Below is a link to their website which explains the procedure for this – http://www.cambodianembassy.org.uk. Visa in advance fee is £15. 
Visa on arrival is obtainable without preapprovals. Visa fee is 37 USD per person. This money is to be paid to the immigration authority at the port of entry. Passport photos are also required.

5. MYANMAR (BURMA)

A visa is required when entering Myanmar and must be obtained in advance. Below is a link to their website which explains the procedure for this – http://www.myanmarembassylondon.com. Visa in advance fee is £14. 

6. JAPAN

UK and Irish passport holders are NOT required to obtain a visa for tourist purposes.

7. SINGAPORE

UK and Irish passport holders are NOT required to obtain a visa for tourist purposes.

8. MALAYSIA

UK and Irish passport holders are NOT required to obtain a visa for tourist purposes.

9. NEPAL

A visa is required when entering Nepal and can be obtained in advance or on arrival at the entry airport. Below is a link to their website which explains the procedure for this – http://www.nepembassy.org.uk.  Visa in advance fee is £20. 
Visa on arrival is obtainable without preapprovals. Visa fee is 25 USD per person. This money is to be paid to the immigration authority at the port of entry. Passport photos are also required.

10. MONGOLIA

11. THAILAND

UK and Irish passport holders are NOT required to obtain a visa for tourist purposes.
